I Will Join My Colleagues and Work Tirelessly for a Solution

Editor’s Note: Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution to end the Trump Shutdown.

This continuing resolution is another feeble attempt by Republicans to do the bare minimum while leaving many issues, including the fate of Dreamers unresolved. I have stated from the beginning that I will not support a spending bill that doesn’t reflect the priorities of the American people, which includes protection for Dreamers.

Leader McConnell and congressional Republicans are asking us to trust that they will allow a vote on a fix for DACA by February 8. Put simply – I don’t trust them.

Leader McConnell and congressional Republicans are asking us to trust that they will allow a vote on a fix for DACA by February 8. Put simply – I don’t trust them. Despite having control of all three branches of government, they have already chosen to shut down the government instead of working with Democrats.

History shows us that congressional Republicans have refused to tackle legislation on immigration. Bipartisan, common-sense solutions that pair Dreamer protections with border security like the Hurd/Aguilar proposal are tossed aside in favor of the draconian legislative proposal introduced by Chairman Goodlatte and Rep. McSally that is nothing more than the Trump Administration’s immigration wish list.

Protections for Dreamers, funding for CHIP and community health centers, addressing the opioid epidemic, funding critical veterans’ infrastructure and services, pension reform, emergency disaster relief funding, and parity among defense and domestic spending are not controversial, but imperative for the American people. They only become controversial when Republicans rely on erratic and divisive advice from the White House and President Trump.

Over these next three weeks, I will join my colleagues and work tirelessly for a solution that protects Dreamers and ensures long-term fixes to the most pressing issues facing our country.

Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva serves Arizona’s Third District.
