When iconic Chicano artist Leo Tanguma was about to turn 80 a year ago, he wanted to do something big, something memorable. What has been called Tanguma’s masterpiece will be unveiled at Ricardo Magón Flores Academy (RFMA) 5330 Meade St. Denver, on Sat Sept. 14th at 10:00 am as part of their kick-off of Hispanic Heritage Month.
The 12-foot by 20-foot mural unveiling is part of their 16 de Septiembre festival celebrating Mexican Independence. The stunning piece embraces the beauty of the entire community including Southwestern Mantio and Indigenous cultures of the US, México, Central and South America and the Caribbean. The celebration runs from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm and will include 30 craft and food vendors, artist and a plethora of entertainment including blessings by Azteca Huitzilopochtli. The event is free and open to the public.
Dean of Culture at RFMA said “We are extremely honored to host a ceremony commemorating Leo Tanguma’s newest mural ‘Our Culture As Education’. Leo has been working in constant collaboration with our students, families and with his assistant Julieta Ochoa for the last 15 months, creating a masterpiece that reflects the history, diversity, nuance, and strength of our community.”
He added “This project was made possible in art because of our partnership with Metro State University Journey Through Our Heritage program. To have an artist of this magnitude in our school for over a year was a monumental life experience for everyone in our community.”
